Love Thursday

I received a text-message from my brother Matt this morning "Love Thursday Update Needed."

It touched me in many different ways. 1st - wow someone actually reads this blog - I better keep it up to date ;-)! 2nd - the fact that Matt needs this update. Matt is away at school at Johns Hopkins. He misses Ben - I know. Ben misses him too - and talks about him alot! What touches me the most is their bond.

I am 15 years older than Matt...and he has always been special to me....part brother - part son (given the age difference). Without going into too much details - Matt is one of the most well rounded individuals I know (and he is only 20 years old). I've always said to "my matt" (my husband matt) - If Ben has half of the qualities of my lil matt i'll be sooo happy!

Love Thursday represents a lot of different things for me. Today it represents how our love for Ben has become contagious for the rest of our family. Ben is so loved and he feels it from everyone!

I love the fact that lil matt and ben have such a special bond....below are a few pictures to show how much they love each other....

Kids Junction!!!

With the wet weather still drying out at the playgrounds, I have been DESPERATE for something to do with Ben in which he can be active and creative. I found out about Kids Junction from a friend of mine. It is so amazing - its like a mini town where each room is a different "store" or "entity" like a post office, food store, animal hospital, etc. PLUS there is an indoor jungle gym, as well as a life size light bright! Just loved this place and as you can see from the pictures - Ben did too!!!!!

Love Thursday

Today, I finally got our 1 video of Ben (that had been taken by my brother on his video camera) converted to DVD.
Its not much, but its important. It's of us receiving Ben at Newark Airport, from his escort Mr. Lee on May 26, 2005. I was emotional when I watched it. I see so much of our 2 1/2 year old in the face of this ity bit 6.5 month old child, who must have been scared to death, but never showed it! I hope to take the video and make it into a nice movie, but until then - 2 pictures of the morning after (less than 12 hours after receiving Ben) that show how immediately we fell in love with our new son! PS - think its time to get ourselves a Video Camer!!!!
May 27, 2005 Our firs morning with Ben.....only home for 10 hours...

VA Tech - the trickle down effect

The tragic events of Monday's VA Tech shooting have left so many of us confused. But it was my husband's comments to me on Tuesday night that left me saddened - mostly because I felt the same way. Matt came home and said "I heard the news - they've identified the shooter and I have to say it stung a little when I heard he was Korean". Though Matt and I are not Korean, our son is. And as parents of a Korean - American we are sensitive to the potential prejudice our son will endure as a minority and Asian-American in our country. This being said - the question beckons - will this change the way people will view "Asians'? Koreans?

I'm trying to not have the news on - as all they are showing is this lost soul strapped with 2 guns, not a sight I wish Ben to see. But when given a chance I'm reading on line. Here is an excerpt of a Newsweek article I came accross.

Braced for Backlash
Korean-Americans fear that hatred toward the Virginia Tech killer will spill over into their community—and fuel negative typecasting.

By Jessica Bennett and Noelle Chun
Newsweek, April 18, 2007 -

The bodies had barely been removed when the racial epithets started pouring in. Cho Seung-Hui, the 23-year-old identified as the killer of 32 on the Virginia Tech campus, may have lived in the state since his elementary school days, but to the bigots in the blogosphere it was his origins in Korea that mattered most. "Koreans are the most hotheaded and macho of East Asians," wrote one unnamed commentator on the Sepia Mutiny blog. "They are also sick and tired of losing their Korean girlfriends to white men with an Asian fetish."

The vitriol of comments like these has shocked America's Korean community, leaving it braced for a backlash and scrambling to control the damage caused by distorted stereotypes. In South Korea—where government officials feared that the incident could further sour relations with Washington—the foreign ministry issued a statement saying that it hoped the tragedy would not provoke "racial prejudice or confrontation." Inside the United States, social-network users set up online forums with names like "Don't Hate Koreans Because of Cho Seung-Hui" and "Cho Seung-Hui Does NOT Represent Asians." ...

My mind says - one incident, one person cannot change the hard work and efforts of two countries. However, those individuals who are already "slightly racist", "slightly prejudice" (note: I really don't believe anyone is slightly prejudice or slightly racist - if you think it - you are it...but that's another blog entry) who only need a little nudge to push them over the edge - received just that - the nudge - to take them into their racial epithets and it saddens me. Let's hope that our feelings of concern never become fully validated and that the Korean-American demographic within our country can come out of this tragedy unscathed.

Love Thursday

Holidays just aren't the same now that we have a child. I can't imagine them without Ben. Here are some pics of Ben from LAST easter and THIS easter.

That was then...

this is now...

Love love love the holidays with my boy!

Easter Pics

A few things to note of this Easter 2007.

1) we literally ate our way through easter this year. We started out with brunch with my father (grandpa), my step-mother (lala), my brother Dave, and his wife Julia.

From there, on to my mom's were we continued to eat and drink.

2) The second noteworthy item is that my sister Rebecca recently bought a pet rabbit! How amazing it was for Ben to spend his Easter with a real live bunny (which I admit is totally adorable!)....

On to the pics.....

Imaginative Play and Adoption Talk

First: Easter was a blast. However, I left my camera at my dad's house. Once I get it back, I'll upload pics from the weekend....egg dying, egg hunts, more eggs hunts, etc. etc. What I can tell you however, is that we all had a really fun time!

Onto the post....Imaginative Play and Adoption Talk...

From the time Ben came home, we have talked to him about Adoption and South Korea. It is really important to us that he is confident within himself about who he is, where he is from, and how we chose to grow our family. That being said, we are lucky enough to meet kids on the playground in our town that are adopted (frequently) and have 2 great friends, Kyle and Owen, who are adopted from Haiti.

Today Ben decided not to nap (yet another post later down the road)...and instead chose to have some quiet play time in his room with his stuffed animals. I was in the room next door working and I could hear him talking..."I'm from South Korea. Where are you from?"

I walk in and see him playing with his beloved, oldest stuff animal "blah blah" the cat. So, I jump right in and pretend that I'm blah blah and I say - "I'm from china". I proceed to say (as blah blah). "I'm adopted, are you adopted?". Ben said Yes.

We then have the following exchange (again, me as Blah Blah)
Ben: Yes, I'm adopted
BB: Me. too! I have friends that are adopted too, do you have any friends who are adopted?
Ben: Yes, my friends Kyle and Owen.
BB: Oh, I know them! Where are they adopted from?
Ben: I don't know...where are they adopted from?
BB: I think they are adopted from Haiti.
Ben: Why Haiti?
BB: That's where they were born.
Ben: I was born in South Korea.
Ben: Snoopy is adopted too.
BB: Where is snoopy from?
Ben: Snoopy is from Haiti.
BB: I think its cool that so many people are adopted from different countries.
Ben: I'm from South Korea, you are from China, Snoopy is from Haiti. Kyle and Owen are from Haiti.
BB: Is ryan (another friend), adopted?
Ben: No.
BB: Is Marcos adopted?
Ben: No. I'm adopted. They are not.

The conversation went on a big longer but you get the gist. Its just so super amazing to me that at the age of 2 I can have these conversations with Ben. I have fears that when Ben is school age, he will come home with the story of a child saying something mean to him about how he is different because he was adopted - as I know kids are so blunt and to the point some times.

I want Ben to be confident about who he is and where he is from. I can only hope that opportunites, like the one that arose today, will help me facilitate openess about our family and how very special it is....

Top 5 recent Ben sayings

The following is a top 5 favorite sayings from Ben as of late:

Love Thursday

Ben had an "idea" - to sleep on the floor and have a sleep over wit h Big Ted. I couldn't resust this shot taken at 10pm last night (technically thursday ;-)...Nothing is more beautiful and peaceful than a sleeping child, regardless of where you are in the world....

"Love Is All Around" is a site that proves that love is, indeed, all around us. Written by Irene Nam and Karen Walrond, this site arose from the popular "Love Thursday" submissions that have taken over the blogosphere. From personal stories and photographs submitted by readers, to anecdotes of love that make the front page news, let's face it: you can never have too many reminders of love.

So every Thursday (lets hope ;-) ) we will attempt to make "Love Thursday".....
